Enjipai means ‘happiness’ in the Maasai Language. This is what was intended for all the women involved in Project Enjipai, a women’s empowerment initiative conceived by former Miss Tanzania Nasreen Karim.

The story behind Enjipai-the project and the store, is a story of a passion, goodwill and sincerity. The jewelry pieces exude elegance with a touch of both African and the contemporary. Enjipai is full of intricate designs made with beads that Nasreen collects during her travels, local materials and silver. When I heard about Project Enjipai I had to make my way there for a spot of shopping and to discuss the store and why women are close to her heart.

Nasreen gave up a 3-year modeling contract in South Africa to continue the work she started during her reign as Miss Tanzania in 2008.

‘After a year I realized this wasn’t for me and I wasn’t patient enough. I have been yearning for the chance to help women and give them an opportunity to sustain themselves. My one wish was to be in a position to give.’

Enjipai  the store, officially launched in December of 2011 despite having been in operation for a few years before that. It took a while simply because we are self-funded and I believe that to achieve anything, you need to start from somewhere.’
